Two days later, Victoria stood before the mirror in her hotel room, finishing her makeup.
She had used the bloodmorph spell in the shower, reshaping her body. The spell let her look like anyone, provided she had consumed a sufficient sample of their blood. It also let her reshape her flesh at will, changing her appearance as she saw fit. Most of the time, she wore her natural form, albeit with enhanced hearing and olfactory senses, since improving her visual acuity made her eyes look inhuman.
This mission required nothing quite so extravagant, and she had reshaped her body so that she stood several inches taller, with longer legs, a prettier face, and larger breasts. Her new dress fit exactly, a champagne-colored gown that looped around her neck, leaving her shoulders and upper back bare, and a long slit up the left side that came up to her hip. Combined with the spiked heels she wore, she would only be an inch or so shorter than Russell Moran, and she ought to draw the eye of most of the men in the room.
Which would no doubt be helpful.
Once her makeup was finished, Victoria scrutinized her reflection in the mirror. The spell had changed her hair to blonde, giving her a heart-shaped face in the process, one that was fuller and softer than her natural appearance. Victoria was pleased that she looked exactly like a rich manâs vapid mistress. She wondered if Russell did in fact have a vapid mistress, one who had high hopes of marrying him and getting an alimony jackpot in a few years.
If so, the mistress was going to be disappointed. In the past two days, Victoria had been impressed by Russellâs intelligence and level head. Under other circumstances, Victoria might have considered trying to seduce him. He was in surprisingly good shape, and the combination of his white hair, gray eyes, and height gave him a startling, even a commanding, appearanceâ¦
Though trying to seduce Nadia MacCormacâs brother would have been the height of stupidity.
Victoria had responsibilities elsewhere. She couldnât allow herself to become complacent, couldnât afford a personal entanglement with someone like Russell. She was doing this because the idea of Singularity with an advanced biological weapon was too horrible to bear, and because Victoria had concluded that Nadia might make a useful ally someday.
For the day when Victoria could finally free the people she cared about from Vashtyr.
Maybe it wouldnât be necessary. Maybe Vashtyr would keep his word to her. It would cost him nothing to do it.
But if he did betray herâ¦
Nadia would make a powerful ally. Just in case.
Victoria put all the fears out of her mind. She had done enough dangerous things in her life to know that such worries were liabilities in the moment of crisis. Right now, she needed to get into Curantarâs mansion and out again. It ought to be simple enough.
Though something could, and probably would, go wrong.
She collected her purse, a small clutch that contained a burner phone and a few other necessary items, and left her room.
